Terms & Conditions
Last updated: 10 October 2026
These terms apply to the ABooks.app website, the ABooks apps (Android and desktop) and ABCommunity. By using any of them you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use ABooks.
1. Using ABooks
ABooks lets you read ebooks (ePub), listen to audiobooks and convert your own PDFs into ebooks. The basic app is free. If you are under 13, please use ABooks with a parent or guardian.
2. Books and your rights
The free books we list are in the public domain or shared by their rights holders. Before you import, download, convert or share a book, ABooks asks whether you own the rights or whether the book is free to share. By answering yes, you confirm that this is true.
ABooks never opens, removes or works around DRM (copy protection). Your original files are never changed: read-aloud, display and conversion work on copies or at reading time only.
3. Sharing in ABCommunity
You keep the rights to anything you share. By sharing, you allow ABooks to store, display and distribute it within ABooks so that other readers can read and listen to it. Do not share anything you do not have the right to share, or anything illegal, hateful or harmful. We may remove content that breaks these terms.
4. Copyright complaints
If you believe something on ABooks infringes your copyright, please contact us through the Contact page with the title, where it appears and proof that you hold the rights. We will look into it and remove infringing content promptly.
5. ABooks Pro
ABooks Pro is an optional one-time purchase that unlocks extra features. On Android it is sold through Google Play; on desktop it is unlocked with an activation code. Refunds follow the rules of the store where you bought it, and your legal rights as a consumer are not affected. We may improve or change Pro features over time.
Pro and your library on a new phone
- Your Pro purchase. Pro bought on Google Play belongs to the Google account used to buy it, not to the phone. On another phone signed in to the same account, open Upgrade to Pro and tap Restore purchase; you do not pay again.
- Backup of your profile (Pro). With Pro, Android’s own backup saves your ABooks profile to your Google account: your library list, notes, highlights, bookmarks, settings, book covers and profile photo. The backup is made and stored by Google under Google’s terms, usually once a day while the phone is charging, on Wi-Fi and not in use. You can check or turn it off in your phone’s settings (Settings › Google › Backup; the name varies by phone). ABooks does not keep a copy of this backup on its own servers.
- Your books. A phone-to-phone transfer during set-up brings all your book files. Google’s cloud backup keeps only 25 MB per app, so it saves the books that fit, smallest first, and always keeps your notes first. Larger books can be downloaded again from the catalogues or imported again.
- What stays on the old phone. Activation-code unlocks (each code counts per device, so type it again on the new phone), and downloaded voices and dictionaries are not included in backups.
- Restoring. Set up the new phone with the same Google account and choose to restore your backup, then install ABooks; your profile comes back on first launch.
Phone backups are an ABooks Pro feature. Without Pro, ABooks keeps everything on your phone only. We are not responsible for backups that Google does not make or restore, or for books that do not fit in Google’s backup space.
6. Donations to the University Fund
Donations are voluntary and help fund free reading and education. They are not refundable, except where the law requires it. If you enter your name or your city/country on the donation form, it may be shown on the donation map and in the recent donations list; both fields are optional.
7. Shop
When the ABooks shop is open, the price, delivery and refund details shown at checkout apply to your order, together with our Refund and Returns Policy.
8. Adverts and affiliate links
The free app may show adverts. Some links to books or products are affiliate links, which means ABooks may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.
9. Fair use of ABooks
Do not misuse ABooks: no attempts to break into accounts or servers, no automated mass downloading, no spam, and no uploading of malware.
10. No guarantees
ABooks is provided as it is. We work hard to keep it running and correct, but we cannot promise that it will always be available or free of errors. As far as the law allows, ABooks is not liable for indirect losses or for loss of data. Please keep your own copies of your books.
11. Your privacy
How we handle your information is explained in our Privacy Policy.
12. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The date at the top shows the latest version. If you keep using ABooks after a change, the new terms apply.
13. Law and contact
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales (United Kingdom). If you live elsewhere in the UK or in another country, you keep any consumer rights that your local law gives you. Questions? Please use the Contact page.
